Maintenance and cleaning of your equipment

Snow and ice buildup

It is essential that the outdoor condenser of a heat pump be kept clear of snow and ice at all times to eliminate the risk of damage and ensure proper operation.
The heat generated by a heat pump during operation virtually melts all the snow and ice that accumulates on the outdoor condenser.

However, during a snowstorm or ice storm, it is very important to clear any accumulated snow and ice. If a significant layer of ice has formed on the top and sides of a heat pump, it must be thawed with boiling water. NEVER BREAK THE ICE WITH YOUR FISTS OR WITH A BLUNDING OBJECT!

If you wish to install a roof over the heat pump, you must maintain the 36-inch clearance above the unit as required by the manufacturers. However, some heat pump manufacturers offer the option of adding a protective cap.

TYPES OF FAILURES CAUSED BY ACCUMULATION:

  1. Condenser motor seized;
  2. Unbalanced condenser fan;
  3. Defrosting mode cannot be performed;
  4. Risk of compressor failure due to lack of ventilation.

AND SEVERAL OTHER TYPES OF FAILURES.

Check the accessibility of your devices

During this winter period, it is wise to ensure, before any service call, that access to your device is not obstructed by any debris or even snow. Clear access is necessary at all times.

Cleaning an outdoor device

It is important never to use a pressure washer to clean an air conditioning or heating unit.
Your unit could be severely damaged.

Our suggestion.

You can simply use a garden hose with a standard flow rate to clean it.

Seasonal maintenance

It is important that the outdoor condenser is always free of debris such as leaves, spider webs, dandelion moss, snow and ice to eliminate breakage and allow for proper operation.

There are two (2) types of cleaning:

  1. Dislodge the debris using running water, directing it from top to bottom of the outdoor condenser. Never direct the jet towards the inside of the condenser, as the debris will follow the same path. The debris must flow towards the bottom of the unit.
  2. Use a small brush to sweep up and down, cleaning away any buildup. It is very important to do this slowly and gently to avoid damaging the condenser.
